Prayer for Fr Eugene Monaghan. Asking the Intercession of Blessed Antonio Rosmini. O God, who, through your Son, has deigned to pour out on earth the fullness of your love. Grant us, through the intercession of Blessed Antonio Rosmini who lived and witnessed to the threefold form of this virtue, to be worthy of shining out with love, as he did in his vision and his works. May you grant our prayers for your glory and for the favour we ask, and for the spiritual good of our souls. Amen.

Request for Our Support
The Jumbulance was a great asset for people with medical difficulties. It makes travel a great deal easier for many as the bus is fitted with beds and fully equipped for all medical emergencies. In my view, it is a charity worthy of our support. The head driver, Brendan, will be running the next Great North Run (13 Miles) and has asked me to seek your support in raising money for the Jumbulance and so I have placed two sponsorship forms at the back of the church.
History of the Parish
St. Joseph’s Hillside Lane (Westernmoor) stained glass windows: The second window to be placed into the nave of the church was that of St. Joseph with the child Jesus. This window was donated by the Smith family as a memorial to Danny Smith a local builder and parishioner. It happened to coincide with canon Dillon’s wish for such a window and it was appropriate to Danny as a father and a builder. This window joins the other representations of St. Joseph as our parish patron and member of the holy family. 1984 /1985
Saints of the Week
Monday: St Rose of Lima (Virgin) Tuesday: St Bartholomew (Apostle) Wednesday: St Louis or St Joseph Calasanz (Priest) Thursday: St David Lewis (Priest and Martyr) Friday: St Monica Saturday: St Augustine of Hippo
Augustine of Hippo also known as Augustine, St. Augustine, or St. Austin was Bishop of Hippo Regius. He was a Latin-speaking philosopher and theologian who lived in the Roman Africa Province. His writings were very influential in the development of Western Christianity. Augustine, a Latin church father, is one of the most important figures in the development of Western Christianity. He “established anew the ancient faith” according to his contemporary, Jerome. In his early years he was heavily influenced by Manichaeism and afterward by the Neo-Platonism of Plotinus. After his conversion to Christianity and baptism (387), Augustine developed his own approach to philosophy and theology, accommodating a variety of methods and different perspectives. He believed that the grace of Christ was indispensable to human freedom and framed the concepts of original sin and just war. When the Roman Empire in the West was starting to disintegrate, Augustine developed the concept of the Church as a spiritual City of God (in a book of the same name), distinct from the material Earthly City. His thought profoundly influenced the medieval worldview. Augustine’s City of God was closely identified with the church, the community that worshipped God. In the Catholic Church and the Anglican Communion, he is a saint and pre-eminent Doctor of the Church, and the patron of the Augustinian religious order; his memorial is celebrated 28th August, the day of his death. He is the patron saint of brewers, printers, theologians, sore eyes, and a number of cities and dioceses. Many Protestants, especially Calvinists, consider him to be one of the theological fathers of Reformation due to his teaching on salvation and divine grace. In the Eastern Orthodox Church he is blessed, and his feast day is celebrated on 15 June. Among the Orthodox, he is called Blessed Augustine, or St. Augustine the Blessed |

Prayer for Vocations
Lord, make me a better person, More considerate towards others, More honest with myself, More faithful to you. Make me generous enough to want sincerely to do your will whatever it may be. Help me find my true vocation in life and grant that through it I may find happiness myself and bring happiness to others. Grant, Lord, that those whom you call to enter the priesthood, diaconate or religious life may have the generosity to answer your call, so that those who need your help may find it. We ask this through Christ Our Lord.
Amen. |
